What is tirzepatide?

Potential benefits and clinical evidence

In the SURMOUNT-1 trial, 2,539 adults with obesity or overweight and a weight-related complication, without diabetes, were randomized to tirzepatide or placebo. At 72 weeks, average weight reduction ranged from 15.0% to 20.9% across treatment groups, versus 3.1% with placebo. What the study can and cannot tell us

Trial participants met specific eligibility criteria and received structured follow-up. Group averages do not predict individual results. The study supports conclusions about its intervention and population; it does not validate a different manufacturing source or a laboratory preparation. Results in people without diabetes should not be transferred uncritically to populations with different health conditions.

Licensed medicine versus research material

The MHRA has authorised Mounjaro, a tirzepatide medicine, for specified indications including weight management. That authorisation applies to the medicinal product and its conditions of use.
